Sprucing Up Your Stairwell: A Stylish Guide

A well-designed stairwell can transform the entryway of your home. By combining elements like beadboard paneling, wainscoting, painted or wallpapered stair risers, and elegant carpet rods, you can create a space that’s both functional and visually stunning.

1. Beadboard Paneling

Beadboard paneling adds texture and a timeless charm to your stairwell. The narrow, vertically grooved wood panels create a subtle, sophisticated look, perfect for casual, coastal, or traditional styles.

  • Placement: Apply beadboard to the lower part of the wall for a welcoming, rustic feel.

  • Finish: You can paint it white for a clean, classic look.

  • Pairing: Combine beadboard with other wall treatments like wainscoting for layered depth.

2. Wainscoting

Wainscoting is a formal millwork treatment that adds depth and visual interest to your stairwell. The raised panels create a 3D effect, making the space feel more grand and architectural.

  • Placement: Install wainscoting from the floor to about 3-4 feet high, or extend it all the way to the top of the stairs for a dramatic effect.

  • Finish: Colour drenching your wainscotting with your walls and trim is best!

  • Creative Combo: Layer wainscoting on the upper portion of the wall and beadboard below for a balanced, textured look.

3. Painted Stair Risers

Painted stair risers are an easy, budget-friendly way to add a pop of color or design to your stairwell. You can go for a classic contrast or a playful design depending on your style.

  • Design: Use bold, contrasting colors for a modern look—think dark stairs with light risers, or vice versa. For a more subtle effect, choose complementary shades like soft pastels or neutral tones.

  • Patterning: Consider painting stripes, geometric patterns, or even stenciled designs for extra flair. This is a great way to add a personal touch.

  • Finish: Use a durable, semi-gloss or gloss paint for easy cleaning and longevity.

4. Wallpapered Stair Risers

Wallpapering stair risers is a creative way to incorporate patterns and textures into a stairwell. It’s perfect for creating a unique, custom look.

  • Pattern Ideas: Less is more! The button above takes you to some of my favourite paired back patterns to use in this application.

  • Material: Opt for durable wallpaper to ensure it holds up in a high-traffic area like the stairs.

  • Style Tip: Pair wallpapered risers with neutral-colored stairs and walls for balance. The wallpaper will serve as a focal point without overwhelming the space.

5. Carpeted Staircase with Carpet Rods

Carpeted staircases with metal carpet rods are a chic and practical way to add warmth, comfort, and elegance to your stairs. The rods keep the carpet in place while giving it a refined, tailored look.

  • Carpet Material: Choose a durable, fairly thin, non-slip carpet runner in a material like wool, sisal, or jute. These are not only stylish but also resilient to wear and tear. You may need more than 1 runner, where you will trim and connect under the toe seam. You may also find stapling the runner beneficial.

  • Metal Rods: Opt for metal rods in finishes like brass, chrome, or matte black for a sophisticated touch.

  • Design Tip: If you have plain risers, consider using a patterned carpet to introduce texture and contrast.
